Chromatic Curiosity

Bigelow Laboratory continued celebrating Bioscience Association of Maine (BioME)’s #MaineBioscienceDay with a visit to Durham Community School, where Research Technician Lydia Pinard painted a vivid picture of algae and its role in our world.

Lydia shared a day in the life of an algal researcher at the National Center for Marine Algae and Microbiota (NCMA) and introduced students to micro- and macroalgae. She also connected these organisms to climate and ocean acidification. Students then played “Is It Algae?”, a surprising game that revealed how many everyday products utilize the science of algae. (Hint: there are many!)

To add a splash of color to the day, Lydia brought live algae in a rainbow of pigments, giving students a vivid look at its stunning diversity.

Thank you for sparking curiosity in careers in bioscience, Lydia: color us proud!
