Senior Research Scientist Karen Stamieszkin was recently featured in a Math4Science ‘Meet the Scientist’ profile. Students from Sweet Treat Arts school (pictured) read the profile before meeting Karen last year.
From the Math4Science: A Year in Review Newsletter: “In April, students from Sweet Tree Arts (STA) school visited Bigelow Laboratory, in East Boothbay, Maine. They prepared for this field trip by reading the Math4Science profile of biological oceanographer Karen Stamieszkin, talking about their favorite kinds of animals, and preparing questions for Stamieszkin.
“Before meeting with Stamieszkin, students toured the labs, noting information that affects Maine’s fisheries and the health of its ocean communities. Then they had the opportunity to meet Stamieszkin in person and ask her their questions, which focused on the eating habits of plankton and right whales and details about the nets scientists use to catch plankton. They also asked in-depth questions about phytoplankton (which do photosynthesis) and zooplankton.”
