Iron Resolve

An international team of scientists, including Bigelow Laboratory Senior Research Scientist Ben Twining, is calling for a new generation of carefully designed ocean iron fertilization field (OIF) trials to evaluate whether this approach can safely and effectively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by stimulating natural phytoplankton growth.

In a recent paper in Dialogues on Climate Change, the authors argue that much larger, longer experiments with rigorous monitoring, environmental safeguards, and clear “go/no-go” criteria are essential to assess OIF’s possible ecological risks and true climate potential.
