Marveling at the Midwater

Bigelow Laboratory senior research scientists David Fields and John Burns are currently taking part in the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Designing the Future 3 expedition aboard the R/V Falkor (too). The researchers are using cutting-edge prototype technologies mounted on the vessel’s remotely operated vehicle, ROV SuBastian, to explore midwater biodiversity off the coast of Brazil.

The team is imaging animals in both their natural setting and in virtual-reality aquaria in the vessel’s labs to collect data that will provide an unprecedented window into the biodiversity and ecology of midwater communities.

If you’ve ever been curious about ocean exploration, now’s your chance to dive between 200-1,000 meters deeper. Watch a livestream from the ROV SuBastian and listen to scientists discuss what they’re seeing in real time. Bigelow bonus points if you can identify this familiar voice during yesterday’s dive!
