The Joy of Seaweed

As Maine Seaweed Week draws to a close today, Bigelow Laboratory is reflecting on the genuine enthusiasm that macroalgae inspired during last week’s Seaweed Saturday expo in Portland.

Associate Curator Kerry Thurlow, Research Technician Lydia Pinard, Senior Research Associate Brittney Honisch, and Postdoctoral Scientist Sarah Douglas (not pictured) helped staff Bigelow Laboratory’s booth, with other Bigelowians joining in on the fun throughout the day.

In addition to an eye-catching tumble tank display, literature, and giveaway items, the booth featured an engaging, interactive activity called “Is It Algae?” Participants sorted a set of cards featuring six products made with algae and six that were not. The game helped connect algae to real-world applications, and many participants were surprised by how common algae-derived ingredients are.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating this incredible marine resource! And stay tuned for a special behind-the-scenes peek at other exciting events, gatherings, and algae-forward conversations that Bigelow Laboratory led throughout Maine Seaweed Week! 🥼
