One of the services offered by Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences’s National Center for Marine Algae and Microbiota (NCMA) is growing large-scale algae cultures in our greenhouse facility. This summer, the NCMA grew Nannochloropsis oculata for Rising Tide Brewing Company‘s newest brew, Buckingham Red.
This hoppy red ale was made in collaboration with Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and Brad Leone and is inspired by a shared love for the ocean. Buckingham Red contains not only our own home-grown phytoplankton, but also oysters from Ebenecook Oyster Co.!
Research Technician Lydia Pinard was able to taste-test Buckingham Red at Rising Tide Brewing Company in Portland this past weekend. Her review? “Fruity, hoppy, and well-balanced!”
