Swell Suited

Maritime safety equipment is rarely lauded for its fashionable qualities. But we think Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences‘s Sea Change Semester students look quite sharp in these immersion suits!

In September, the students participated in a boating navigation and safety course with Dave Drapeau, senior research associate and captain of the R/V Bowditch. After reviewing a number of important safety topics, the group took to the river for time in the water with survival suits and a raft.

These bold red suits are designed to prevent hypothermia and provide essential buoyancy. While we’re hopeful our students won’t need to use them during an actual emergency, judging by their smiles, they seemed to enjoy testing them out for a float on the Damariscotta River.
