For more than half a century, Bigelow Laboratory<\/strong> has conducted world-class ocean science here in the Boothbay region. Even though our work spans the global ocean, this community remains close to our heart. \ud83d\udc99<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our new Community Round-up <\/strong>series, we highlight team members participating in local events, going above and beyond to give back to our neighbors, and sharing fun updates from our campus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inaugural September 2026 edition includes a fun back-to-school event at Boothbay Region Elementary School<\/strong>, new signage on our campus, and a deep dive into ancient DNA with Senior Research Associate Tim D\u2019Angelo<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BACK TO SCHOOL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 26, Bigelowians Abby Jones<\/strong> (right) and Aislyn Keyes<\/strong> (left) represented our team at Set for Success – Boothbay.<\/strong> The program was hosted at Boothbay Region Elementary School<\/strong>, and it provided free backpacks, school supplies, clothing, and wellness services to local elementary school students. Abby noted that many attendees who stopped by our table were familiar with the lab\u2019s work thanks to the educational and outreach events we lead throughout the year. Thank you to Abby and Aislyn for inspiring larval-stage ocean scientists at the event: science has a long, hopeful road ahead!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

SIGN OF THE TIMES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Bigelow Laboratory put the finishing touches on a new sign welcoming visitors to our institution. Thanks to Neokraft <\/strong>for installing it! TAPPING INTO HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 10, Senior Research Associate Tim D\u2019Angelo<\/strong> led an Ocean on Tap<\/strong> talk at \u00c6keir Brewing<\/strong> in Wiscasset, giving community members a peek at how Earth\u2019s history is encoded in the ancient DNA of invisible organisms.
