On Tuesday, team members on Bigelow Laboratory’s latest GNATS (Gulf of Maine North Atlantic Time Series) research cruise spotted something huge in the distance: Mount Washington! Dave Drapeau, captain of the R/V Bowditch, snapped the mountain from about 80-90 miles away in the Gulf of Maine.

For over two decades, GNATS has been an essential tool for capturing vital information on the biological communities of the Gulf and validating satellite-based measurements of ocean color with on-the-water observations.
