One Year On

Compared to forever, 12 months may not seem like a very long time. But a lot has happened since PFAS “forever chemicals” spilled in Brunswick a year ago this week.

On August 19, 2024, an accidental release of approximately 1,450 gallons of PFAS-based firefighting foam concentrate mixed with 50,000 gallons of water occurred in Hangar 4 on the former Brunswick Naval Air Station.

Post spill, Bigelow Laboratory researchers continue to conduct regular monitoring of PFAS in Harpswell Cove, as well as across Casco Bay. Along with Senior Research Scientist Christoph Aeppli, Research Technician Hannah Sterling has played an active role in collecting and analyzing samples.

Hannah shared details about the event in a recent Café Sci talk titled “PFAS in Casco Bay: Tracking the Fate of Forever Chemicals on Maine’s Coast.”
