Know Your HABs

If you monitor Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), study phytoplankton, or work in marine management, the Karen A. Steidinger Marine Harmful Algae Taxonomy Training Course offers an opportunity to build essential identification skills at the species level. 

Led by experts, this intensive 10-day course at Bigelow Laboratory combines theoretical and hands-on training in identifying harmful algae found in U.S. marine waters, with a focus on light microscopy and familiarity with alternate identification methods. 

Participants will gain experience with:
-Over 60 HAB species
-Live and preserved specimens
-Collection, sample treatment, and enumeration methods
-Culturing techniques and newer HAB identification methodologies

The 2026 course will take place August 9–21 (inclusive of travel days). Applications are due May 1.
