Laser Focused

The Center for Aquatic Cytometry at Bigelow Laboratory recently received a new instrument to help keep us at the forefront of microbial ocean research.

The new five-laser spectral flow cytometer, made possible by the generosity of longtime supporters Craig and Kate Muir, will help scientists differentiate plankton species and populations with more precision than ever.

Describing the new equipment, SRS Nicole Poulton said it’s as “cutting edge as it gets.”

The novel technology encapsulates our institution’s long-time leadership in the field of aquatic flow cytometry. In fact, Poulton is co-leader of a working group that recently published a best-practices guide on various phytoplankton imaging systems (including flow cytometers) for newcomers to the field. Check it out in the comment below.

The CAC has also organized a world-class professional development course on flow cytometry for decades. In May, Poulton helped lead the introductory course for anyone interested in gaining hands-on experience with the technique.
