Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences researchers are among the experts tracking the “chocolate tide” algae bloom stretching along the coast from Maine to Massachusetts.
In a recent feature in The Boston Globe SRS Nick Record explains how the algae Karenia mikimotoi, while not toxic to humans, could have implications for the broader marine ecosystem, including fish and shellfish. He also shares how forecasting tools can help us better prepare.
“This is a species that wasn’t in Maine waters 10 years ago,” Record said. “It’s one of a number of new harmful species that have been showing up.”
