Bigelow Laboratory proudly hosted a table at the Pemaquid Oyster Festival last weekend, proving once and for all that these tasty shellfish pair splendidly with a side of science (in addition to the usual cocktail sauce and mignonette, of course!).
Research Scientist Robin Sleith was joined by PhD student Sydney Greenlee and Senior Research Scientist Emerita Paty Matrai. The Bigelowians provided information about oysters as well as education programs at the laboratory. They also encouraged community members to create fun, stamped postcards like the one Sydney is holding here.
Robin also shared insights into an oyster hatchery project he recently completed with Senior Research Scientist Peter Countway. The project developed rapid and relatively inexpensive kits to test for bacterial pathogens. These kits enable hatcheries to take proactive measures to detect these pathogens, control the spread, and protect their assets.
Thank you to Robin, Sydney, and Paty for taking part in the fun local event!
