Today marks the two-year anniversary of severe storms that battered the Maine coast on January 10 and 13, 2024.
In East Boothbay, these systems caused seawater to wash over the bridge connecting the mainland to Ocean Point — where our lab is. Beyond temporarily disrupting access to Ocean Point, the storms highlighted the long-term threat rising sea level poses to our community.
Bigelow Laboratory teamed up with the Boothbay Regional Climate Action Team, Gulf of Maine Research Institute, the Town of Boothbay, Lobsterman’s Wharf, Ocean Point Marina, and Hohonu to address the situation head–on.
In this video, Senior Research Scientist Nick Record explains Bigelow Laboratory’s role in this project and the value of regular monitoring data for ocean forecasting. He also shares the importance of nonprofit organizations, businesses, and local governments working together to mitigate the effects of sea level rise on coastal communities.
