Maine has the resources to become a global leader in the emerging “blue biotech” industry.
These advantages include an expansive coastline; thriving fisheries, aquaculture, and seaweed farming industries; robust research institutions; and more. Additionally, the recent Blue Economy Task Force specifically flags marine biotechnology as a prime growth opportunity.
Bigelow Laboratory and Hatch Blue, a global leader in blue economy innovation, strategy consulting, and ecosystem building, are working together to help create a roadmap to make that growth happen.
Last month, over two dozen stakeholders from across the state came to Bigelow Laboratory’s campus for networking and brainstorming. That workshop kicked off a 90-day innovation “sprint” that will result in a report next month laying out the opportunities, obstacles, and priorities to establish Maine as a global hub for this new industry.
The work continues in earnest this evening, when Bigelow Laboratory will co-host a blue economy networking event with the Maine International Trade Center. This gathering in East Boothbay will provide additional opportunity for businesses and stakeholders to get up to speed and provide input.
