Bigelow Laboratory is delighted to participate in Maine Bioscience Day, which is taking place in middle schools across the Pine Tree State this week! This event, organized by the Bioscience Association of Maine (BioME), aims to get students excited about careers in science.

Yesterday, research associates Brigid Carr and Vishaan Nursey made a big splash with students at South Bristol School, showing that science is anything but dry. After a brief introduction to careers in the field, the Bigelowians delivered a quick lesson on acids, bases, and densities. Then, they guided students through two watery activities to bring the concepts to life in the classroom.
In the first, the students added carbon dioxide, lemon juice, and baking soda to water mixed with red cabbage-based, pH-indicating dyes to see how each substance influenced the water’s acidity. The second activity illustrated different densities using dyed liquids that were allowed to come together and form floating layers.
Thank you to Brigid and Vishaan for inspiring and engaging students in midcoast Maine with your informative, fun approaches!
